Change: Make our pets food as zero waste as possible.
Action: This can be a difficult area of your life to get more sustainable in, but it is possible. I was determined to find a way and end my daily frustration with the packaging of pet foods and T-R-E-A-T-S. Not only is this idea more zero waste but it is also very healthy, fresh and transparent. I really like knowing exactly what my kids are eating.
This food is a mix of:
-fresh vegetables, fruits and eggs sourced from my weekly CSA delivery or farmers market
-white rice and almonds are bought in the bulk foods section
-supplements that are sourced in glass or aluminum
I also make or source (in my own jars) bone broth or veg broth when possible
If you feel you or your pet may need or want more protein then I suggest easily boiled skinless chicken breast. This boiling water is also a great “broth” addition. Chicken breasts can be purchased at your local butcher and you can usually use your own container.
For most dogs this will be a very different meal than they are used to so you may need to play around with flavors, supplement with additional food and be patient.
This food can be intermixed in so many different ways, I allow my inventory and expiration dates lead my recipes. If I have rice, I use rice, if I have almond meal, I use that. The mix of vegetables and fruits vary on the season and harvest. This variation is great for nutritional diversity and also for discovering what your dog prefers or doesn’t yet, but may learn to love.
